How do you smooth painted mudwork
Recently purchased a home and I am trying to redo the bathroom. The mudwork over the wallboard seams was never sanded and looks like it may have one or two coats of paint over it. I tried sanding with just regular sand paper and it would not cut through the paint. I even tried the orbital sander..that burnt a circle on the wall.
What is the best way to smooth the seams out? Unforutantely I have 3 of them from ceiling to floor. Possibly going over the area with a joint compound or would that make an even bigger mess?? Any advice is greatly appreciated. |

Use joint compound. You will be sanding all day if you dont. Do 2-3 skim coats and sand. Prime the patched area and paint away.

I agree with using the joint compound. You'll never sand those spots down, beings they have been primed and painted already. Apply some new compound at the edges of the old compound in the low spots and feather it out. Apply a couple of thin coats until you've achieved the desired look you want, sand, prime, paint.
