There are many products avail to make the stripping job easer. At one time strippers were very volatile and nasty to use. The newer paste type strippers are much more DIY friendly. I would recommend starting with a stripper product then sanding and cleaning the piece by hand. The final finish will only turn out as good as your prep work.
