homemade pickle solution?
 
And I don't mean the white-what picklesque shortcut of paint/primer cut with water (etc)

How did they do it in the old days before Minwax et al? One suggestion I read was that they'd dissolve galvanized nails in vinegar - then wash that over the wood.

Anything else? I want to pickle - but I don't like how various modern methods are looking. I think what I want is more of a muted grey tone - not so much white or natural wood color coming through.

There are actual oil base pickling stains available. But if you want to reinvent the wheel- have fun!
