My HOA is on my case about "painting" my accent shingles on the gables of my home, threatening to fine me if I don't take action. Personally, I think the cedar shingles look fine the way they are, at best they might need a light stain to freshen up the wood.

Also, what would be a reasonable estimate to get this staining done by someone? I got a couple bids in the $1200 range, but that seems ridiculous to me. I guess I could do it myself, but I am not much of a DIY-er and would need a much taller ladder (and my wife thinks I'll kill myself).
Tell them to give you in writing what by-law or rule you are violating by leaving the shakes natural. That's a pretty common design and not exotic or offensive by any means. If they push the issue I wouldn't paint it. You will end up repainting it every couple of years. Certainteed makes a vinyl siding that resembles shakes. You could install whatever color you like and be done with it.
