HGTV Magazine article on Painters

Just read an article about what "painters say behind your back." Apparently, they discuss situations that painters encounter when they arrive. Things like windows painted shut. Furniture and wall hangings. Number of coats, etc. The article seems to indicated that painters take jobs without even looking at the room(s) or discussing with homeowners the scope of the job. I find it hard to believe that any painter, pro or otherwise, would take a job, let alone quote a price, on something sight unseen. Am I right?

Re: HGTV Magazine article on Painters

You are correct, igneous. I check out the job and scope of work before hand. Nothing worse than getting to a job and finding out there's twice as much prep as you expected or HO's have a room so packed full of stuff and there's no place to move it. Things like that are discovered when you go to give the estimate. I talk all of that over with the HO. Things I might point out are, "you know there's a crack in the drywall in the bedroom that will need fixed before I paint." Or, "the trim has some old, glossy oil-based paint on it that will need sanded, primed, and, then painted."

The only time I take on a "blind job" is if it's a regular customer who knows my process and how they are charged for the service provided. With them it's just a matter of showing up to do the job when they are ready for me.

They exist but they are a minority. The ones I have crossed paths with were drunks and/or drug addicts.

The people on Thumbtack get 5 bids on painting jobs, site unseen

How the painters bid on them, IDK. I know I am not one of them.

Sounds like people either just starting out or who are desperate for work.
