Help! spilled stain!

Help! Yesterday as I was staining our new pretreated deck a dark brown, (I was on a ladder and had about a half gallon of stain on top- I now know the reason not to do this...) Approx half a gallon of stain somehow fell off and landed on me and on the deck which was not yet stained! It was a huge mess! I had no choice but to hurry and stain the deck floor, however some of the drips were already dry, leaving spots on the deck and as careful as i was there are smears and spots and dark spots everywhere! What is the best thing I can do? Sand the dark spots and reapply a second coat? Any other ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!

Help! spilled stain!

Was it an oil base or water base finish? Do you have any pictures?

Help! spilled stain!

well i got it all figured out.... it was an oil based so i spread it completely over the deck. I let it dry for about 3 days because it was thicker than it should have been, then i sanded the entire deck floor... not to the bare boards but enough to make the wood grain show through. Then i used a staining sponge and reapplied a light coat of stain to even out the appearance. Looks great now!! The deck is about 90% covered, but is used as much if not more so than the inside of our house so I plan on applying a clear sealer to the floor as well to hopefully get an extra year or 2 before i have to seal it again!
