Help painting RED walls WHITE, and Japanese style bedroom

I'm painting my room all WHITE, its currently hot red (i know big mistake) i have no clue of what type of primer and paint would be the best to cover the red walls without it turning into a light pink.
(I don't know if oil or latex paint is better)

Also im planning to decorate it and give it a Japanese look, im having black shoji style sliding doors for my closet.

I need help on choosing the color for the floor trims and door, considering i want my room to have a Japanese look to it, and considering that the shoji closet doors are going to be black. I was thinking a dark cherry wood color? not sure..

I bought an oak flush flat wood door.. i couldn't find any other colors except white, i was thinking of painting it a very dark cherry wood color (not so reddish but more like a black), how can i do that? is there a type of paint made for wood only that will still give it the wood look and not just painted over?..

Lastly, any tips on choosing the right rollers and brushes to paint?

Thank you

The easiest way to get all of you're questions answered would be to go to a real paint store and ask.Do not ask at a Home Depot or Lowes .

If you're doing a Japanese decor, and I don't necessarily have a suggestion, but I'm not sure white should be the color of choice. Was that suggested or did you get the idea from research?

Unless you are going super modern with the decor I don't think white would be the color of choice either. Regardless, use a good primer like Zinsser 1-2-3 to kill that read color before painting over it.

imho if your primeing only to change colors its not needed. top quality paint will cover better than any primer.now if the red walls are an oil base then that's another story, but i doubt they are.quality latex paint 30 to 45 dollars a gal. purdy or wooster 2 1/2 brushes purdy or wooster covers 3/8 or 1/2. for the door their are stains to make it dark or just paint it and so be it.

Go to the library and get some books on Japanese interiors. I think you will be happier with bamboo, straw and those kinds of colors than deep cherries. Black and white is likely to be too stark. I think of Asian design with blacks and reds as more Chinese for some reason.

I do disagree about using paint and no primer for such a dramatic color change.

I have no particular opinion about Japanese decor.

But to get red walls white, I'd suggest using Zinsser BIN primer. Use white. You might want to apply two coats.

Then apply a good interior latex paint. It'll take at least 2 coats of paint as well.

Hi! So i went and bought Sherwin Williams Duration Acrylic Latex paint (Extra White, satin eggshell) and i bought Zinsser Primer 123 water base.

Will this work out??? Or was i supposed to grab Zinsser BIN? =\

THANKS ALOT! by the way how long should i wait after applying primer? Do i have to paint same day after primer dries or can i do it next day? Will it affect ?

One coat of primer( what you have is fine) 2 coats of finish paint up to 30 days after priming. As already posted, the primer probably is not necessary but it cannot hurt either.

bin is a great primer. but for this applaction its probly the worst ,123 will do a good job in covering. again if your primeing only for the reason of a color change its not nessery, now if the red is a oil base ,and i doubt it is, yes you would need a primer

As otheers mentioned, there is no need to prime. Red is only a problem when painting over lighter colors. The lighter colors bleed through. If your using SW Duration you won't have a problem covering the red with 2 coats.
