Help with Paint Color...

I was looking for some help in choosing a general direction for painting my bathroom. My house was built in 1950 and has pink ceramic tile wainscoat with a burgundy tile trim and burgundy tile floor. I need to paint the upper part of the wall, the cabinets and trim. Any thought on what color family might look good with these tile. Right now everything is white, and would like to change that.

thanks in advance

Help with Paint Color...

Whoowee! Been a while since I've seen that color combo.
Personally, I would send the tile to the same place that the Avacado Green or Harvest Gold appliances went. LOL
On to the paint. There are a couple of ways to go with this, with these colors contrast is nearly impossible, so the next question would be light or dark and how bold are you?
For light, I would go the same color as the light tile but a shade or two lighter. Remember that light is going to bounce off of the tile and influence the wall color.
For a warmer look, the same but a shade or two darker.
For a bold look, take the two colors and find something in between that strikes your fancy, some shade of red.
One of the designers that I work with once combined burgandy with royal blue, a real eyepopper and the client loved it but that's not for everyone and there wasn't any pink to deal with.
Hope this helps.

Well, I love pink so I might not be the most unbiased... (lol)

How about a warm creamy beige? Almost going to the tan shades. It's not white, but it still keeps some lightness in the room. Plus it's flattering to skintones and won't distort color so much when the lady of the house is putting on makeup.

Good luck!

Have you considered wallpaper?

I know, it's a bathroom, and people will tell you not to wallpaper a bathroom because the steam will unstick the wallpaper, bah blah blah...

I wallpapered my bathroom nine years ago and it has held up just fine. And it looks WONDERFUL.

I mention wallpaper because you can certainly find a pattern that has both of these colors. Something simple would be best, maybe a delicate floral?

And if you don't want to wallpaper the whole room, a wallpaper border around the ceiling join will help bring these two unusual colors together.

That's a great idea! Even with our low ceilings, wallpaper does just fine. I've wallpapered three times (a girl has to redecorate!) and have never had a problem. What a terrific solution!

Thank you!

I hope RockLobster thinks so too.

Wallpapering is fun. The best part is looking through all the sample books....

My sister-in-law had the same color scheme, she used a shimmery gray for her walls and cabinets. I thought the maroon/gray combo looked quite rich.

Here's a neat web tool for picking paint colors for any room:

http://www.cupantileandpaint.com/interior_painting.html

click on the "Let's Paint" button

and then you can choose a room (each having a few different types to choose from)

and pick color for walls, ceilings, trim, accents

have fun!

I would suggest a tan colour also. I think it would look good.

Also, I have seen wallpaper done in bathrooms that really looks nice.

You can even go with a suttle stripe.

..........my 2 cents

The shimmer gray sounds pretty.

The house I'm buying has bright blue (Wal-Mart blue!) tiles. Walls are horrible pinstripe blue wallpaper that doesn't match. I'm thinking of a yellow? Probably Rubber Ducky Theme. He He.
