help help -- painting / stripping metal front door

I'm planning to repaint a front door and two panels along either side, all of which are some kind of metal surface. The paint on them is cracked but not peeling, and there's two coats (at least).

I thought I should try to strip it since it was cracked, and bought the Jasco semi-paste stripper. But it is really not doing musch. If you put enough on it might sink in to one of the cracks and bubble up. But that just takes off the immediate area.

Because the surfaces are vertical I can't just pour stripper all over it. Even if I could take the door down, it wouldn't help for the panels.

Is stripping even necessary? What should I do?

Thank you.

No stripping isn't necessary. Stripping is not a general prep for repainting, and is usually only used when the surface is extemely degraded. Do whatever you have to do to get past the stripper stage, ie, does it need to be neutralized. If the paint is cracked, but not peeling, give it a sanding with 100 grit paper, clean it down, do any priming, caulking, patching, then put your paint on.

As Joe said, sanding is your friend on a project like this. I've seen painters use their circular sanders to take the paint off of metal doors all the way down to bare metal.........much faster AND SAFER than using a paint stripper.

As previously mentioned. You don't need to strip the door. You will have to get any loose, flaking, craked paint off. I would lightly sand the cracked paint areas. After sanding wash the door with tsp, apply a metal primer to any bare areas, I like using Sherwin Williams Procryl primer followed by Sherwin Williams DTM (direct to metal) paint.

thanks so much all. I was worried I was going to have to spend the next 36 hours of my life chipping tiny bits of paint off the door. Much easier just to bust out the sander.

Bublsort, don't sand that door down to bare metal. If the paint is bonded, not peeling, just give a sanding enough to break the sheen and give the next coat something to grab onto. Hold your horses.

Oh yeah, don't worry, I was going to follow your advice. I just meant that it was nice to know I could forget about the stripper.
