Lindi,
Lots of homeowners struggle with color choice..I help alot of them regain color confidence. 1st thing to do is look around your neighborhood and take into account the colors that suround you. Next take in consideration the plants in your yard along with the present color of your roof. from there you have to pick a color that represents your house..and you.. remember colors don't match .. they agree or disagree with each other. If the colors you choose form a relationship with the surrounding colors then you will achive flow.
I first ask a customer what colors the look good in, (take a look in your closet) If brown looks awefull on you then it will look awefull around you. Best bets are earth tones.... (colors that you see when you go outside..and look down ..and slowly look up) you see dirt, grass, bark, blue skies and clowds.... all diferent shades and hues.

I would pay close attention to any architectual details... make them stand out with trim paint...I would suggest an Ivory or a bone ..bright white is kinda shocking..and anything that you don't like or want to hide you could just paint the body color. I would also suggest a different color on your door... it will make the whole job stand out a bit with just a hint of contrast..... Be brave, color is your friend!

I say cruise around see a house you think looks sharp there you go.

Benjamin Moore has a Personal Color Viewer that is similar to the SW color viewer, but has "MOORE" options.

The coolest part is you can take pictures of your house, load them into the program, and after identifying certain zones, you can paint your house with BM paints. This is really slick! My wife and I used it in selecting colors for our home.

It is well worth the $10 download, because it's insurence against buying 10 gallons of paint and then not liking the color!
