Gloss finish to satin finish?

I am finishing some tongue and groove with water based satin polyurethane. Well I did one coat, then half way through the second coat I realized that i needed another gallon. The gallon was applied before I noticed that I had grabbed the wrong can and it is gloss instead of satin. What do you experts thing would be the easiest way to knock the gloss off so that it will match the rest of my satin finish? I was thinking of say 400 grit sand paper or maybe a 3M pad.

Just applying a full coat of the right stuff should do it. Try a spot and see if that isn't correct.

What ever was the last thing on will determine the look.

yup. But since t&g is easy to do one board- do one. The WB poly dries really quick so you will see.

Actually, for a perfect satin finish in WB polyurethanes, I recommend two coats of high gloss and a finish coat of satin. This promotes a harder finish a a less cloudy satin floor.

Just do what everyone here has recommended: finish out the second coat with gloss and a full third coat of satin and you'll be fine.

I did the same sequence with poly. Works out great.

You have to be careful sanding poly too much while it is curing.

Yep, it's that simple. Just apply the final coat of whatever finish you want -gloss or satin. Two coats will give best result. I ended up doing that mistake on one of the walls in my guest bedroom! It turned out fine. I will post pictures if possible. I have the pics on my phone but for some reason it refuses to recognize my pc and so can't upload it here. Will try again.

Well I have about a third of it up already before the error was discovered so I will now need to apply it on the ceiling. Any tips on doing this easy? We used a pad to apply it on sawhorses, and the pad had a screw in opening for handle, like a broom handle. I think it may be easier than I am imagining. The satin finish will be here tonight after my son picks it up in town.

Oh, and there must be an inside joke here that I am missing.

What is the exact brand and product you are using? WB polys can be tricky to use, they dry very quickly. Sometimes an additive to slow them down and help them spread is needed ( XIM Latex Extender is my fav)
I will use a roller and apply to a few boars at a time, and back brush very quickly afterwards. look for joints as stopping points to avoid lapping.

I have come to prefer Zar Ultra Max waterborne poly because it is very workable compared to something like BM's stays clear.

I haven't used that in a long time, but it probably is as fast as most of them are.
If it is thick, thin just a bit ( 1 cup/gal) and about half that of extender. BTW- I think flotrol is close to worthless as an extender..
Take a run of maybe 4 boards one end to the other and backbrush like I said. If 2 of you can do it -makes it easier.
You will get a feel for how far to go by how fast you can work it in. Long strokes to finish.
