Should I paint my sidelights as well as the front door?

If the door and the sidelite match in design, would think that you would also like them to match in color. If you are going for a specific design technique, then it would be hard to tell without looking at it.

High acrylic content with superior UV protection in a water-based suspension would be my first choicel Semi-gloss for a door I suspect but no firm rec until you post a picture.

Rough up the current door surface and prime with a solvent based ALKYD primer. Then two coats of finish. You can use either oil based or water based finish over alkyd. I just think you are going to get better mileage from an acrylic paint film.

Ignore the post by Darreng....

Sdsester's advice is perfect.

If the project's not already done, what final color are ya doin'?
A darker primer may be advisable.

Excellent point. If using a deep color, have the paint store tint the primer with 40-50 percent concentration of your chosen finish color formula.

Maybe 20 years ago this was true, but, not anymore. I always liked oil on doors (especially metal) for its' hardness and durability. Now, the latexes have caught up and you can basically get that same, hard, durable finish as you once got with oils. Oils take too long to dry and you have to leave your door open to bugs, etc. for a long period of time. Most people I work for paint the sidelights the same color as the door.
