Have to disagree there. I think it's marketing brilliance. Blame that on the ignorant consumer who is so confused about primer that this approach is only natural for the manufacturers.

Consider: many consumers think that that have to prime before they paint. Like when repainting a room a new color, for example. So they prime first (because you have to) then apply 2 coats of finish coat (because you're supposed to, and might even need to for good color coverage).

Have they ever wondered why they don't need to add another primer coat between those 2 coats? Yet in 2 years when they repaint that room, they'll prime again over the last finish coat they put on.

Paint and primer in 1 is starting to sound pretty good to them.
