Finish For Alphabet Blocks

Don't know which sub-forum to post this in, so I'll trust the moderators to move it as appropriate...

So my artsy-shmartsy daughter is making Alphabet Blocks for Christmas, for our oldest son & daughter-in-law that are expecting their first baby in February.

I've cut the blocks out of Poplar. She's going to use bright acrylic paint for the letters & figures, but we're uncertain what clear finish she should use.

Any suggestions? Obviously, it's absolutely essential that it's safe & non-toxic. Alphabet Blocks always find their way into kids' mouths...

Thank you!

Most of the woodworking stores have food-safe finishes like these ones: http://woodworker.com/gen-fin-salad-...l&searchmode=2
