Exterior repainting prep

I am prepping to repaint old porch posts. I need to remove old nails that had been used to hold Christmas tree lights. What do I fill these holes with prior to repainting?

You could use wood puddy. But for such a hole I find a dab of latex caulk smooth into the hole works with good results and it can also easily be painted.
