I just had a painter paint my new cedar siding. He used oil based primer. I didn't know about oil base primer, but I really don't like it now. I didn't know he'd have to use paint thinner also. It made me sick, and I've had to keep all the windows shut for 3 days now while the paint is still gassing off. How long does it usually take for the oil paint/paint thinner smell to go away?
It won't go away completely until he puts the topcoats on. Unfortunately your painter really had no choice as Cedar has tannins and oils in it that will bleed into the finish paint if not sealed up by oil-based primer.
I understand. He did already put the top coat on, it helped a little bit with the oil paint smell. I read somewhere else online it takes a month for the smell to go away. I can deal with that. I hope that is true.
