exterior house colors

I have a brick front raised ranch (circa 1960). How do I choose exterior paint colors? Paint brick? Colors of brick unusal (terra cotta, salmon, & lightly thrown in dk brown). Love black shutters.

I hate to see anyone paint brick. To do so requires incredible amounts of prepwork. It may be better to have the brick sandblasted to clean it up and bring it back to its' former glory. It can be done and today's paint manufacturers have paints specifically made for brick, block, and masonry. As far as choosing colors, most paint companies have websites that allow you to pick your style of house and then experiment with color. That's probably the easiest way to choose colors. Another way is to search your neighborhood/city for houses similar to yours & see what catches your eye. You definitely want to co-ordinate colors and accent colors so you don't end up with a green roof and red shutters for example. Best of luck in your search.......don't be afraid to visit your local paint store for help.

Don't paint brick, wallpaper or paneling. It looks like hell and it's hard to fix later.

This link here helped me when choosing colors for the outside of my house. Main color, trim, accent color, all to compliment the brick work.
