Epoxy Garage Floor Paint

What is the best thing to put on top of epoxy garage floor paint to keep it from scratching?

Would an oil-based polyurethane prevent an 1-part epoxy paint from scratching?

Our house is a split level, with the ground floor a concrete slab. We decided to re-paint it due to the old epoxy flooring had yellowed BADLY. So, we spent quite a bit of time removing the old epoxy and properly prepard the floor for a new coating. We applied a primer designed for concrete and applied over it a 1-part epoxy paint. Now the paint is dry, but is not scratch resistant. In fact it scatches very easily (with a fingernail). We were told at the hardware store that an oil based polyurethane would protect the paint, but we are skeptical. Can anyone give us some advice?

Epoxy Garage Floor Paint

One part epoxies are usually water based and, as you found, are not very durable.

I'd suggest that you look at www.garagecoatings.com. This is the web site of Versatile Building Products. Their 2-part 5073 polyurea is designed specifically for garage floors. It is EXTREMELY tough when cured and is higly UV resistant.

Note: before you put the sealer down rent a floor buffer with a mesh pad (they are usually black) and run it over the epoxy. The idea is to lightly scuff the epoxy to give the sealer something to grab onto. If you don't you might later see some peeling or 'hot tire pickup).

I would not use polyurethane over it, you will want to use a clear that's intended for concrete such as H&C concrete sealer. Its sold through Sherwin Williams. If your floor epoxy is water based you can't go over it with an oil base was the concrete floor etched prior to applying your epoxy? And did you do a moisture test prior to applying?
