How can I tell if the the crumbling white paint in my basement laundry room is from efflorescence or just 80 year old peeling paint?
The rest of the basement is not painted with this white paint so there isn't any other "peeling" or crumbling paint , and seems to be fine everywhere else. No white fuzzy stuff anywhere else, but the wall in question is bordering my yard. The other 3 walls of the basement border the street, my driveway, and my garage so it's only the one wall that borders an area of land that soaks up water.
Efflorescence can be a localised problem (in a given area) not necessarily everywhere in your basement.
And 80-yr old paint? paint only lasts a couple of decades at best under ideal conditions.
