dumb question - paint ceiling or walls first

i just put in drywall in my family room. it used to have the old 1970s thin paneling with no drywall behind them, even the walls that were on the exterior (although there was insulation). so I tore down all the paneling and put up drywall. I plan on priming the drywall and then painting, and also repainting the ceiling as there are a few scuff marks and old water stains.

so my question is after priming, should i paint the ceiling or walls first? i was thinking that it's kind of the either or and it doesn't matter, but thought i'd check first. thanks

- Make sure you use a primer designed for coating raw drywall! It's really important.

- IMO If you are doing white on white, who cares on the order. If you are painting ceiling and walls different colors then paint the ceiling first.

ceiling is going to be white and the walls a shade of blue. thanks for the tip about the primer, I didn't know there was a difference.

Also, if there are water stains you will need to use a stain blocking primer, not just plain drywall primer.I would avoid Kilz. There are many more better brands out there. Go to a real paint store( Ben Moore, Sherwin Williams, Duron, Pittsburgh, etc) for you paints.

Gravity pulls drips and roller spray downwards. You are unlikely to get drips or spray on the ceiling when painting the walls, but the reverse is less true.
So do the ceiling first then the walls.
