drywall tape in corners

I hope this is my last question ever on walls.

While removing wallpaper I often see a tape in the very corner, which seemed to be put on the drywall before wallpapering.

If an edge is loose I've been pulling it off because I figure with all my wetting the wall down and scraping, it would eventually come off anyway.

Now for the first time I see a more noticible crack where the corners meet. (after pulling the tape off)

I have paintable caulk in a gun and I have spackle. Which is better.

That drywall tape is meant to span the opening and should not have been removed.
It really needs to be redone ( applied with taping compound, and sanded.
Caulking the corners will probably not be enough, and just spackle or mud will fall out or re-crack.

I'm near Orange City. Just looked at your profile. Guess where I'm from? Stow, Ohio. You're the 3rd Ohio person I've met on here.

That tape was better if you left it alone. It was to be there to give strengthen the corner Joint so it would not crack. Now you introduced a way for it crack and keep on cracking.

Sometimes in new construction, or additions, if the drywall guy knows the job is getting paper or popcorn, they only do level 2 or 3 drywall finish. I've seen it many times, latest last year on a popcorn removal. Ba$tads.
