Drywall Primer - What kind?I

I am getting ready to prime and paint my 1,100 sf basement which will be mostly new drywall except for a run of cabinets that are existing which are already painted, but I will be recoating.

After doing some research on primers, I've read that Kilz 2 is not good for new drywall? I have always bought 5 gallons of this in the past because it was cheaper than the small amounts, plus it seemed to work great on new drywall as well as coverup of old paint.

Is it really that bad? I've never personally had issues with it. We just painted the whole upstairs approx 1,500 sf and it worked fine? Maybe since I'm not a pro painter I'm not as particular. I just like having a primer that wokred for both rather than having to buy 2 different kinds.

Should I stick with what I know/ am used to? Or what recommendations do you have. I'll be buying from Lowe's or HD most likely.

If you are buying paint at HD instead of a store that sells quality paint( like a REAL paint store) then you are doing OK. Why would you need 2 different primers. If the cabs are alredy painted there is no need to prime them, unless you are making a drastic change.

For your new drywall, use HH Zinsser Bulls Eyer 1-2-3 Primer-Sealer. I use this primer year round and never had problems.

Good Luck!

I'm all about what "works for you." If you had success with Kilz2 then by all means use it on your new drywall. Personally I like Sherwin-Williams Drywall Primer.

Glad to hear you are priming your drywall. So many people skip this important step.

One advantage of 123 is it has a bit of a sheen (shine) to it which will help any imperfections stand out before you start putting topcoats on.
