Drywall Gouge

Have a few small drywall gouges that I need to seal before applying joint compound. I have on hand:

1) Sherwin Williams Drywall Primer (latex)

2) Sherwin Williams White Pigmented Shellac Primer (aerosol).

3) Zinnser 123 Primer Sealer (water based).

Can I use either to seal the gouge, or do I need to buy yet another product? The drywall is torn down to the brown paper. It's only a very small area, and I was thinking that the Shellac Primer might work. The last thing I need is 1 gallon of SW Drywall Conditioner.

Any of them will work.

If it's just a small area then the spray can is fine. Zinsser coverstain will also come in a spray can.

What you are doing is basically waterproofing the brown paper so it doesn't bubble from the mud. Of your choices the shellac will do that the best.

Thanks!

No they won't. You can't put a latex primer over brown drywall paper. It will not stop moisture from the joint compound from penetrating so it could cause an air pocket under the patch and it will fail. I'm not familiar with Gard, which is latex, but I get the impression that it would work. But, of the choices offered, BIN is the only choice. But for me, that's a cover stain job, as Matthew hinted to. Joecaption, there's what, thirty other forums here, all of which I'm sure your expertly suited for. I think you're more valuable there.
