dots in joint compound

we removed old paneling, primed the plaster wall with Kiltz(latex) then applied joint compound in a texture design. we followed directions for adding water for milkshake consistency to joint compound. we applied to wall with metal putty knife and also used plastic putty knife. Once joint compound started to dry you can see dots in the compound. these dots were not in the plaster prior nor the primer. what has caused this? can I paint over with paint or do I need to prime again?

Dots... you mean like pinholes? Innies not outies, and not specks of color...

Pinholes are caused by air bubbles in the mud. very common problem. working it a bit as it sets in helps, but for laying on a texture, I have little experience.

one of the best drywall guys i knew always mixed at least a cup of water to a new 5 gallon bucket of compound and mixed with a drill with a small mixer attatchment. it makes the mud smoother and you dont get those little air bubbles in it.
