Does the color of your exterior paint effect your electric bill?

I am looking to paint my exterior a dark paint tone and my contractor advises against it because it would increase my electric bill.

If you live in Douglas AZ, a dark color will presumably increase your electric bills because your AC wil be running more. If you live in Barrow AK, a dark color will decrease your utility bills.

A light color will help in an area dominated by AC, a dark color will help in a heating area.

Agreed. Anything light will reflect light and anything dark will absorb it. However, whether this would ever be the most significant factor on the energy load of your house?

There's a reason why my brick farmhouse was white-washed 200 years ago. Cooler in the summer in the Mid-Atlantic.

Keep in mind, that the exterior color of your house will change it's thermal behavior.

The change to your electrical bill will or will not change based on how much you use your A/C or heat.

That's why I've changed my house from white to slate blue
To soak up more heat
My dormer roof I did in white shingles to reflect the summer sun
