Do stain-blocking primers really work?

Hi I am getting ready to texture an old water-stained plaster ceiling with joint compound. I did some patching already and brown stains came through. I can see a few more brown stains on the ceiling, some big, some small. The house is circa 1920s, I know the roof does not leak now but obviously did in the past. I just would like to know if anyone doing a project like this had good results from a stain-blocking primer. If so what brand did you use? Did you apply it directly to ceiling or waited until you were done texturing it? Did 2 coats suffice? I just don't want to do the whole project only to have those brown stains come through. Thanks for any help! Annie

Annie,
I have always used a shellac-based primer for water stains. It seems to work well. It dries quick, but smells like alcohol, so do it on a day when you can crack some windows. I would prime the ceiling before texturing. Others may have different opinions.

As firehawk said prime first with Bin, apply texture, then prime with any good primer, then apply finish paint

I have used shellac before with good results. I know what you mean about the smell. If I remember right you have to stir it constantly too :) That's what I'll use then. Thanks everyone.

Thanks for the help everyone! I finished the project and posted pics on my profile. It turned out great, lots of work, that is for sure!

just used Zinsser's Smart Prime for the first time to cover water stains and was happy with the results - of course six months down the line I'll know "how happy". Had a situation where I couldn't use the alcohol because of the smell so figured I would try the smart prime - zinsser claims it works great on water stains with all the benefits of a water based product.... The only place they don't suggest using it is to cover ODORS (typically from smoke damage) - as the pros here know only the Bin will seal in the odor.
