Do I need to plaster?

Im a novice when it comes to DIY.Recently decided to paint the bedroom. Its drywall or plasterboard .Stripped all the wallpaper and sanded(major mission) ,its a smooth surface but kind of furry. In some spots I went a bit nuts and took the top paper off the boards.Do I need to plaster or can I buy some kind of undercoat product that will allow me to paint over it.Ive read a lot of these chat sites so Im really confused now. Some people say you need to plaster others say I couldnt imagine anyone wanting to plaster these days....If I plaster can I plaster directly onto the walls or do I need to paint some kind of adhesive underneath?(thats another thing people seem to debate about).Any helpful advice from experts would be great!

Do I need to plaster?

Are you talking REAL plaster or just misusing the term?Do you mean apply joint compound( mudding)?

Do I need to plaster?

Wow now I am confused. No didnt mean joint compound.Always under the impression the term to plaster was a generic term meaning to apply or paste a coat of something onto a wall with a trowel(not just real plaster). If not maybe I will have to rephrase...do I need to apply something to the walls first before I paint..either real plaster,a compound or anything else to make them smooth or can I just apply an undercoat paint product?
