DAP caulking question

Does DAP need to be primed before painted? I used alot of it during my last project on the baseboards(white baseboards, white DAP). Now that everything is settling I'm starting to see alot of paint cracking in the mitre joints and other spots that were caulked. I didn't prime these spots. Trying to determine cause before attempting to simply paint over again.

What specific paint are you using? I had "mud cracking" when using Glidden Evermore (cheap HD paint) over DAP during a renovation. Not so with the Sherwin Superpaint and Pro Classic Waterbourne I use in my own house.

ICI Dulux, I believe its a latex with teflon in it. Over priced, sticky, and not my favorite but its the exact color match to the rest of the house.

how long did you allow caulk to dry before painting? if it was not completely finished setting, it would do as you describe. especially in areas where you needed it thicker.

I am thinking what slick and mouse are, that it didn't dry long enough before you painted it. You really don't need to prime the caulk itself but if you have any suspect areas that you are applying it to like bare wood then I would prime those first. Caulk will always stick to primer better than it will bare wood.

yup, and any caulk over 1/8" thick will take a few days more in a DRY bathroom to cure for painting.

The tube said 2 hours I believe, and in most cases I believe it had adleast that much time. I was doing about 10 different things at once finishing the project so in some cases some spots did not have over night to cure, but I didn't have any voids over 1/8" thick, my work was pretty decent this time around.

In these spots affected, I also used Lepage spot filler as it dries hard, fast, and sands easy. Used it overtop of where I prefilled with dap so that I could sand and blend the mitres. Now to think of it, I don't think any areas with just DAP are affected, only those where a mixture was used.

Yup, the two boards were blended together, you could barely tell they were even cut when I was done. Now you can see the noticeable black jaded black line, that's the cracking.

If that's the worst, then you are way too picky. Almost all mitered joints will open back up to some extent after sitting a few days, if that is what is bothering you ,re caulk and touch up.

Yep. Only thing I can add is to try and push the caulk into the crack rather than trying to form a "bridge" over it.
