Cutting Paint Color Lighter

When ordering paint, and let's say I want the ceiling a lighter shade of the SAME color as the wall, how do you guys *order it* over the counter.

Ask them to cut the tint 30%, 40%, 50% ??

If you go to a real paint store and not one of the big box places, all you need to do is tell the person working there what you want to do and they will take care of you.

Very often by cutting the formula a percentage- what you end up with may or may not look like a lighter version of what you started with. It is kind of a crap shoot.
Best to see if they can doctor up a quart and see if that's what you are looking for, then go for the full amount.

Got it. I'm painting 2 rooms a darkish grey and another a sage...Just wanted to shoot the ceiling the same gray - just 2-3 notches lighter.
