Crackle Medium?

I have been playing with this stuff all week and I just can't make it work!! I'm about ready to scream! I did a coat of basic primer on one day, then 2 coats of flat latex for my basecoat yesterday. Then this morning I kinda slapped some of the crackle medium here and there as opposed to spreading it over the whole wall. I just wanted some cracking here and there. I waited a couple of hours for it to dry. Now I've just gone and tried to spread on the top coat of flat latex and it's just not doin' what it's supposed to- no cracking, just kinda rollin' off the basecoats and beading up. What am I doing wrong?! This is the second time this has happened to me.
Please help!

What kind of crackling medium did you use? Some are specifically for porcelain type crackle which are very fine- those are not good for walls or furniture.

Another thing I have found is type of base coat - flat or eggshell? sometimes flat holds topcoat too much- won't let crackle work as well. Last of all and I find this to be the main factor... I NEVER let the crackle dry so long, every time I have, it does what you describe.

Crackling medium is essentially a very slow drying glue. Because it dries slower than topcoat-it causes cracking. However, if it dries most of the way before applying topcoat, the effect is lost.

Forget what the instructions tell you- try a sample by waiting no more than 15 minutes - let me know the results...

Good Luck,

yep, absolutely, too long on the drying time - the crackling action results from the additional movement of the sandwiched layer of drying glue
