Question

Correct secquence to paint room?

I am painting a basement with drywall walls and cielings and cove molding. what is the correct sequence to painting the crown molding, cielings walls, window and door trim, and baseboards? also, can I use a high gloss latex over a high gloss oil base paint on the crown molding, door/window triam and baseboards without prime-ing? Are the power paint rollers worth the money and are they easy to use or do they waste paint? How much wall surface should a gallon of paint cover? Finally - Any suggestions regarding painters tape? - I see TV shows that dont use it?

Traditionally you work from up to down, doing ceiling/walls first and then the moldings
Some find it easier to cut in walls, and do the moldings first, then ceiling/walls

No

Clean
Scuff sand
Dust (tack, swiffer, or vac)
Oil-based Primer
Then latex

Waste of money, waste of paint, waste of time

Aprox 350 sq. ft.
Better paints tend to cover more (400)
Cheaper paints as little as 250 sq. ft.

Painters tape is the most over/miss-used product thanks to those shows
Painters tape does not allow anyone to simply wave the paintbrush in the general direction of the tape, slop on paint, and have it look "professional"
On the contrary, in general if not used properly it makes more of a mess

The proper use of tape is to tape off hinges, knobs, stained trim, heat registers, and such to avoid splatter
Not to "cut in" and have a "straight cut line"

Most pros do not use it to cut lines
