Clear paint base?

Is there a paint base that's completely clear that I can buy from a big box store? I need to thin dark color paint to have "wash" effect--black wash, rather than white wash. Not looking to spend much, so don't want to do a paint store, just the cheapest paint from Menards or Lowes, or even Walmart. I tried neutral base, but that didn't work, it still has too much white. Is there one that's just plain clear?

Re: Clear paint base?

Why not just mix in a few ounces of white paint at a time until it reaches your desired color?

But yes, they do make "clear" base paint. My local Habit ReStore sells it, but I sure don't know if mixing it with your paint will do what you want. I think the clear base paint they sell is mfg'd by Pittsburgh Paint.

I'm sure a paint pro will chime in here shortly.
