cleaning up interior window sashes

I have some interior sashes i want to clean up before painting, there is some paint flaking. How would you go about cleaning this up.

I tried a scotch brite pad that didn't work to good. I was thinking about a small brass wire brush.

Thank you for any advice.

Sand paper actually works well---remove the sashes and clean and paint them on a table---much easier to get a good job ---

Agree with sandpaper. Depending on the shape, 120 is a pretty good grit. Not to agressive, but enough to clean them. If the paint is chipping badly- scrape with a putty knife ( or 5 in 1- made for the job!) , and possibly step up the grit to 80. prime them with a good primer sealer.

80 grit only if you must and I would smooth out the grooves you carve with 120 grit afterward.

You want a SHARP pull type scraper for this.
