Ceiling Paint bubbles

We recently scraped popcorn off of our living room ceiling to go to a flat finish. After scraping there was a lot of old peeling paint leftover, we patched some but ended up using a triple thick water-based primer (Zinsser Peel Stop). While drying some bubbles appeared but disappeared the next day. We painted over the primer with a latex-based flat ceiling paint and now have bubbles all over that don't seem to be going away (one area was painted over a month ago). We washed down the ceiling and let it dry for a couple of days before painting so it's not due to moisture or dust.

Anybody have ideas on what went wrong and how we might fix the problem?

Re: Ceiling Paint bubbles

The naked, torn up drywall paper will do that when it gets wet. You should have sealed it with something like RX 35.

I'm fairly sure we didn't scrape down all the way to the dry wall but regardless what solutions might you recommend given the current state of things?

Re: Ceiling Paint bubbles

Scrape off the bubbles, fill the craters with spackle or joint compound, at least 2 coats, allow that all to dry, sand, prime, paint.

Re: Ceiling Paint bubbles

I figured something like that, I was preparing myself to sand the entire ceiling down to drywall but your idea seems a bit less grueling.

Doing a google search on this issue gives some pretty interesting solutions, one of which was using an iron to flatten the bubbles. Made for a great picture of my girlfriend ironing the ceiling but didn't do a thing.

Gards is good for torn paper but regardless, what gymschu said is the standard procedure.

Re: Ceiling Paint bubbles

I assume applying Gardz over the paint is not an option?

Certainly is an option , especially if it was cheap ceiling paint. I would just try a small area and see what happens

Re: Ceiling Paint bubbles

Next time scrape it down to the drywall. Better results that way.
