Color does add definition. Most ceiling whites that I have used are a little bit darker than flat white of the same brand.I use flat white instead of ceiling whites because I like the ceiling to be as white as I can get it.Just my preference.
Charlie Daniels painting and repair
When I went to paint my ceilings I initially went with the SW ceiling paint in the stock color, but I found it to be much too stark. I went back and got it tinted to Alabaster instead, looks much better though it still reads as "white". If you compare the two colors the ceiling white is definitely a cool blue white.
Depends on the lighting in your house, though... most of my rooms don't get a lot of light and have warm-toned floor & wall colors. A lot of people choose to use a lighter version of the wall color on the ceiling as well, claiming white creates a sort of box top effect and makes the ceiling look closer than it really is.
