Caulked Molding Joints

I have long runs of crown and baseboard molding in my house and in the winter, some of the joints open up as much as 1/8" or 3/16". I thought about using white silicone on the joints, but someone told me that they tried that and in the summer they have silicone bulging out of the joint. I've attached a couple pics, but I imagine everyone knows what I am talking about already. What do y'all think about this? Thanks.

Not silicone anyways. You wont get paint to stick to the molding even if you peel the silicone away. Maybe an acrylic caulking. But if its going to close up in the summer, it might bulge out. You could give it a try.

I was thinking about paintable silicone. I'm worried that regular caulk wouldn't be flexible enough.

I had the same problem and paintable silicone was what I used. I put a bead on the crack and pressed it in with my finger until it was flush with my trim and then painted over it without a problem.

What about when the wood returned - did it bulge out and look funny?
