can substitute tsp degloss?

I am looking to degloss the semigloss paint inside an apartment. I would prefer to use substitute tsp to do this, since it would clean the paint same time as it was deglossing. But I am concerned substitute TSP products don't have the same deglossing properties as real tsp.
Otherwise I'm thinking of using those sanding sponges. Also I heard XIM UMA and other primers are good over semi gloss surfaces, but isn't that an expensive way to deal with the problem?

are you prepping to repaint? XIM primers will stick to glass man, truly incredible. Dont think you can buy real TSP anymore. Deglossers are overrated anyway, scuff sand it and use a good primer.

I would rather use wet sponge sanders, I'm tired of dust. I'll check out XIM primers.

We have had great success with XIM-UMA. It is an adhesion-promoting primer. If you are changing from alkyd semi-Gloss to an acrylic system, this is a good bridge coat.
