Can I spray Rust-Oleum Clear Rust Inhibitor Directly Onto Rust?

Found an old vintage chandelier on the side of the road that I want to hang out by our pool. It is all rusty from years of being outside, but I like the old patina. I purchased a clear rust inhibitor from Rust-Oleum in order to stop the rusting and to extend the life of the chandelier, but after reading the directions, is says to remove the rust before applying. Should this still work to seal in the current patina or do I need something else?

Why are you posting this again like a week later? You got good answers to your last post in the interior decorating section!

Because is a specific question I have about the particular product I bought--something painters may know more about than interior decorators.

Ok. To answer your question, the clear coat may inhibit some future surface rust but you should wire brush or steel wool any you can off or use something like Naval Jelly. I would not expect the clear coat to arrest the oxidation already in progress. Your other option is to use a rust conversion paint. It is pricey but you will not need much. Of course you may loose the look you are after. All the converters I know of leave a black surface. There are a bunch of brands. these are two I have used.

Thanks! I may give the clear coat a try on a part of the chain first to see.
