Can I sand down my trowel textured walls and repaint them without having to retexture them?

I have the heavy trowel textured walls in my house that I have been told are dating my house. Is it easy to sand them down? If I do sand them down, do I have to retexture or can I just paint the newly sanded walls?

Without seeing the texture it is hard to say for sure, but I have found it is virtually impossible to sand even small texture flat and have it look good without extensive skim coating.

There's several ways to do it depending on how deep the texture is.
Skim coating, going over it with 1/4" sheetrock, riping it all down and starting over.

Joe- we're making progress with you!!
At least you admit there is another way other than a tear out!

lol

IMO- get a good taper and he'll make short work of resurfacing, and he'll be worth every nickel. For someone who knows what they're doing it is just a day at the office.

Get a bad taper and, well. no.
