Can I mix alkyld and oil stain?
I have purchased various gallons of similar color stains. Some semi transparent some solids. All purchased from the "opps" shelves in local hardware stored. I am planing to stain (for the first time) my deck. I realize Latex cannot be mixed in but what kind of results can I expect from the mix of Alkyd Resin and Oil stains. I see some of the listed ingredients are the same.
I tried it anyway !!
I have found out it mostly NOT recommended. However many alkyd stains are acrylic based and these can never be mixed with the oils stain. I however had oil based alkyd stain. I did the best I could with research, and decided it was worth a try. I dumped all 4 1/2 gallons of alkyd-resin/oil and oil stains into a five gallon pail had them shaken. The satin seem very stable the solids were staying suspended well and no visible liquid separation after a couple days. I went ahead and stained my deck with consistent coverage and expectable dry time. I would say yes some can be, but don't hold me to that maybe.
The color came of great. The exact type of brown I was looking for. $19.00 for 4 1/2 gallons for deck stain!
I will probably make sure to always try and buy all of the same type of stain (not to have to mix types) for most of my future projects.
