Came home from college, bathroom paint issues

Hey all,

Big fan of DIY projects! When I came home today for the holidays, I was sad to see that both my parent's bathrooms were in terrible conditions. I love my parents and want the best for them so I thought they deserved a descent bathroom.

I have done a lot of DIY projects ranging from fixing and painting motorcycles, cars, etc. and pride myself in my handiness. I turn to DIY chatroom since I've never tackled painting bathrooms before.

Attached you will find some pictures that I took of my family bathroom. Word of caution, they are pretty bad...

So any advice/guides you guys can point me to? I tried googling but it seems that no one has paint THIS bad.

What in the world is that? In all my years I have never seen anything like that before. People pay big bucks for a crackle finish, you may have started something new.

As I see it you have three options.....

1) use a broad knife 6" or so and just scrape the surface and take off what is willing to come off, and replace the casing moldings.

2) scrape off what you can, sand what you can to prep it for a skim coat using drywall mud, then prepare yourself for a ton of sanding.

3) gut the room of all wall material and install new drywall and trim moldings.

INSTALL A GOOD HIGH VOLUME EXHAUST FAN

What material is on the walls that caused that to happen? You’ve got a big project ahead of you.

Honestly, I have no idea. Still in college, majoring in political economics. So are there any detailed guides how to tackle a project like this or am I going to have to hire a professional?

Looks like somebody painted latex over oil without proper primer. All of the topcoat must come off, one way or another.I think gutting it ( as posted) and starting over would be the easiest.

One more thing you might try. If it IS latex, then you might try an old fashioned propane powered wallpaper steamer, if you can find a rental place that has one. It should come off in sheets.

YeGods! That';s a crackle finish!

Zitcan the trim, scrape what you can off the walls and ceilings, lightly sand with idiot stick, primewalls with 1,2,3 or Kilz. Mix 5 gal drywall mud with 1 gal latex paint. Skimcoat the walls and ceilings using 1 3/4-2" roller and striking down smooth with hawk and trowel. After cured sand again, prime and paint 2 coats semi gloss latex. Replace new trim.

OR

Zitcan the trim, scrape what you can off the walls and ceilings, lightly sand with idiot stick, primewalls with 1,2,3 or Kilz. Texture ceilings, hang fabric backed vinyl wallcovering on walls. Replace new trim.

Want to preserve that texture? Is it still stuck on quite firmly?

Paint it over with semigloss.

Doing a skimcoat is a different skill from painting. If you haven't skimcoated before you might want to get a professional in to do that part.

If it's latex over oil with no primer, it should scrape off really easy. I usupect it is defective paint.
