Buying same paint from different stores

I recently bought some Benjamin moore aura and used it to paint a room. Nice stuff... but I didn't get enough. Can I go to any store and get the same paint, and should it match? I realize in theory it should, but practically speaking... are the paint machines really that good?

yes they are

Paint even from the same store can be off just a little bit if the lot numbers of the bases are different and the pigments added are off even a little bit. This is why it is always a good idea to mix gallons you buy together before painting them individually.

Tinting systems are very accurate though so you shouldn't worry unless you have a real tricky color. And Ben Moore invented the whole pigment system everybody uses in some form. I remember at the very beginning of my career as a painter learning from guys that mixed all their own color on the job with tint color bottles. Amazing eye for color!

To be safe. If at all possible, go to the same store you had got the paint from before.
Paint batches can vary and the tinting machines calibration could be just a little different. They can get it very close though.

Very true that calibrations can be off from store to store, although calibrations and mainternance are usually done on a regular basis. There was a time when stores did not have access to a color computer or and accutinter- those were the days (NOT).

My company deals with this daily in the SF Bay Area, where we have many stores all located within a few miles of each other. The incidence of complaints from batch variation is almost nil. We calibrate and clean our machines daily; some independent dealers may not. I think that if you are able to break at a corner, you should be fine.

I'm not a professional painter, but from decorating my own pad - and watching professional painters paint my parents house (many times), I am certain that as long as you buy the exact same paint (same brand and colour) and mix as much of the old tin paint with the new tin of paint then it won't make a difference, the colour will match.. Hope this helps! :-)
