best way to thin latex paint for spraying?

Recently i watched a u tube where someone mixed 4oz of latex, 1oz flotrol and 2oz of water base polyurethane which he sprayed through an HVLP gun. It seems like a good idea. Has anyone on this forum tried it?

Sounds like alot of non paint- , but it all depends on the sprayer ( a 2 stage will not atomize as well as a 4 stage, for instance) the paint- some is much thicker than others, which extender( XIM is a thinner product to begin with than Flotrol) etc.
Best to experiment with your gun, and the paint you want to use.
then technique comes into it.
A good painter can handle a thinner material without getting sags etc.

Anotherwords- there is no general formula.

I do not spray but poly? Why?

I was thinking the Flotrol and poly would help thin the paint and give it a harder finish. BTW I have a two stage HVLP.

Like Brush said, you really need to experiment with your gun and material. I usually just start with about an ounce of Floetrol and see what happens. I look for atomization similar to what you get from a rattle can. I'm not sold on mixing poly in. If I reach max recommended concentration of extender, I continue with bottled water.
