Best top-coat over oil based paint?

Hello - My husband and I are rehabbing an old barn. We've added a loft. I have painted the plywood floors with red oil-based paint. I am looking to put a coat (or two) of something on top, so the paint will not wear as quickly. Would a polyurethane work? Or an acrylic lacquer? Or something else? And why?

I would put a floor grade clear finish, just be sure that whatever you choose will be okay over oil. Depending on how long it's been since the floors were painted, you might have bonding issues with clear. Since you can't sand the floor to create a bond, you'll probably have to find a 100% acrylic finish with a strong bonding property. Go to a real paint store and explain what you have and need. Or, do some online reasearch for the best finish for your situation.

Thanks, Joe. You were correct. I did go to a real paint store and got the same advice you offered. I purchased an Acrylic Clear Glaze. It is usually used as a top-coat after putting an epoxy coat on garage floors. But is appropriate for what I need also. Thanks for the great info!
