Best Solid Stain for Siding...?

What is the best solid stain for a house in Chicago with cedar siding? The house was previously stained, but the stain is starting to show wear.

We've seen posts that suggest Cabot, but is their product much different than BM and others? Is there one product that's clearly best, or a top group that are all equally good?

Also, when looking at Cabot we see the options for O.V.T and the Pro.V.T... Ignoring ease of clean-up, which of these will protect and last longest -the oil-based (O.V.T.) or acrylic (Pro.V.T.). We're planning on two coats.

Thanks!

Cabot makes good products. It's hard to beat Sikkens Rubbol products for a solid stain though.

Best Solid Stain for Siding...?

Cabot makes fine products
As the question was which is the best, I'd have to say Sikkens

Thanks. Are you guys referring to the Rubbol Siding Finish (Oil/Acrylic hybrid) or the Rubbol Solid Stain (Oil)?

Sounds like Cabot Pro.V.T (Acrylic) is the A- choice while Rubbol is the A/A+ choice. Sound about right?

With Ben Moore and Sherwin Williams solid stains right behind
The difference is pretty slight, but if we are picking nits then yup
IMO:
Sikkens
Cabot*
BM
SW
But I can really recommend any of them, there's not a "C" or lower in the bunch

Though some may have a preference due to brand name or familiarity with the slightly different application techniques...for example for spraying siding one might prefer ProVT due to ease of spray and experience doing so
You may find some that will re-arrange the "bottom" 3
But no matter how you slice it, the Sikkens has the edge

If doing siding, then use the siding stain
If doing a deck, then use the DEK

* I can only comment on ProVT, I can't get OVT out here

Excellent perspective. Thanks.

One clarification... my Sikkens options are called "Siding Finish" (hybrid) or "Solid Stain" (oil); which of these did you intend for covering previously stained cedar siding.

Also, does the product guidance change if the previous stain is acrylic? (it's not peeling, just areas of wear; but it seems to be an elastic coating that I can lift small sections with a blade). Does that tip the scale in another direction?

Thanks again!

I'd go with the acrylic. Whenever we run into any sort of issues with cedar siding Sikkens always specs the Acrylic.
