Behr premium plus and ammonia odor 1 yr later
I painted my garage last year with 2 coats of Behr premium plus primer and paint in one, and recently in the last few weeks I've noticed a persistant ammonia odor in the garage. I tried to localize the cause but could not find it. My nose just kept leading me close to the wall near the door entrance. Finally I noticed that the odor was coming from all the walls in the garage. I' m trying to understand what is happening and why now. The only change in the garage is that we are in the winter and its colder. I am in Las vegas and the air is dry and cold. My concern is that my dogs spend part of the day in the garage while I am gone. Any one know what is happening and how can I remedy this.:(

Try calling Behr paint company---I read one other post mentioning an ammonia odor on a new job.

Please,Let us know what they say---Mike--

But... last year? Last year as in a couple of weeks ago, or last Spring?

Are the dogs caged, or left loose in the garage?

I find it hard to believe that the paint is still off gassing after a year. Once paint has cured there is no more smell no matter if it is oil, latex or any others. Paint usually fully cures in about 30 days. My question to you is do you have any pets or any wild animals that may have got into your garage.

sorry i should have finished reading that you do have pets so you need to us a white pigmented shellac on the wall and a epoxy on the floor to get rid of the smell.

I've used a lot of that exact paint and never smelled it once it was dry. One I'm working now is unheated while I'm gone and there is no smell when I first walk in.
Animal urine smells like amonia.

Yup. I bet its the critters, not the paint.

Order should be odor. Tried to fix it when I saw it but couldn't.
Any ways called Behr and they said the same thing should not smell after paint cures. I painted last spring. They suggested open garage door and fan out which I am doing now. The only critters in the garage is the dogs and they in the past had urinated in the garage in this one spot. That problem has stopped. Have a different dog who gets the concept of the run. Also I can see the residue left behind. Kind of become a dog urine expert over the years, if you know what I mean. Which in this case would be very obvious. I keep a clean garage. Every thing up off the floor. I live in Las vegas few critters. Perhaps rabbits but they are far away. I'm going to check the attic to see if anything is up there. hopefully just fanning out the garage will solve the problem. I appreciate the imput. I am new to the site. I know there is a lot I can learn from you guys. thanks

If even BHERly paint lingers a year later? There is absolutely nothing even in that watered down can of crap that could make your house smell like ammonia.

Chase down the critters.
