avoiding slippery deck stairs

I want to stain or paint my wooden deck stairs, but I'm worried about them being icy and slippery in the winter. Any products or techniques to recommend to add a grainy texture to prevent a slippery surface?

You can use an adhesive strip after finishing
It's usually sold in different colors and thicknesses by the foot

Or you could add Skidtex or other anti-skid to the primer

The problems are, you can't really add Skidtex (and that sort of stuff) to stains, and the only paints you might use on decks would be a floor and paitio type, which are, as a rule, much shinier than stains, and therefore more slippery when wet

I suspect the solid stain would be flat enough, and therefore not slippery enough to cause concern
I've been applying it for quite some time now with nary an issue
If there was, a few thin strips of that adhesive would be easy enough to add

I'd prefer that to adding Skidtex to the primer, then using a (much less desirable than stain in this case) paint over top
But either is an option

I have been pondering the same question for my grandparents deck, I have been thinking to buy skateboard grip tape and put on the stairs that are by the rails. I think that should do the trick, although I wonder what complications that will bring for staining it...
