Any suggestions for deck sealing of dock?

The dock is in the south with heat, sun and rain. My friend suggest Wood RX which is latex based. It is supposed to last longer. Wal Mart has Valspar oil based and ditto for Lowes with Olympic.

Any suggestions of a product you used and liked. Thanks.

If you choose a latex finish, be sure that it is not something that is prone to cracking and peeling. My personal preference is for oil based finishes outdoors. They generally look more natural, hold up better to the elements, and are easier to maintain over time.

No matter what type of finish you are looking at the two key things to look for are pigments and binders. Pigments protect the wood and binders or resin holds the pigments in place. The more harsh the environment the more protection you need if you want the finish to last.

This ipe boat dock was finished with Woodrich-Brand Wiping Stain. This product is loaded with both pigment and resin so it is easy to maintain. You just have to keep it clean and wipe it down with fresh stain when it starts looking a little dried out from the sun. The nice thing about the high quality transoxide pigments is they allow the grain of the wood to show through so it doesn't have that "painted" look.

Thanks! That picture came from Jon Chapman of Pro Pressure Clean and Seal out of Seminole, FL. He is one of the professional refinishing contractors listed in my directory at ipedeckguide.com

Here are a couple pictures of failed finishes being chemically stripped with HD-80 heavy duty wood stripper. The first was sent to us by Carolina at ProWash and the second is another of Jon's projects he did in the Bahamas. Wish I could have been on that job!

The scratch marks you see in the picture below are from when he hit the wood with a brush to check if it was time to start powerwashing. Once you can easily scratch through the failed finish and see fresh clean wood it's time to wash it off.
