I've got a problem where I have paint peeling off of a plaster wall. It seems to be very old paint, the house is 1930, and what cracks and peels seems to go all the way down to bare plaster. It's not peeling like normal bad paint peels (bubbling and blistering), it cracks and peels off in solid chunks that are 1/16" thick or so, including multiple layers of paint. About 6 months or so ago on one particular wall I scraped off everything that was loose and patched everything with drywall compound, primed with kilz water based primer. Fast forward to today, I noticed more cracking in the paint on the same wall, under the new primer. This was on a masonry party wall (interior), the same sort of thing is happening on other interior walls.
Is there anything I can do to stop the old paint from cracking? Any sort of primer that would seep in and stabilize the old paint? At this point I'm thinking about covering it all with 1/4" drywall, which is going to be hard on the masonry wall.
