Another Q re: oil or latex, etc..

I never knew how complicated painting (or rather preparing to paint) would be!

So after being told by a painter that my walls were probably oil based paint, I did the test with alcohol and found that some of it is actually not oil based. Now in the bedroom, the walls, ceiling and door frames are the same color. When I do the test on the wall/ceiling, the color comes off, but on the wood door frame, it does not. So do you think they used oil based on the doors? Do I then have to prime it with an oil based primer first? Or could there be some other reason that it doesn't come off from the wood?

A lot of painters like to use oil on trim work or doors because it will flow out better so it's very possible. As long as everything is in good shape on the walls you really won't need to prime. As for the door, your call. If its got a sheen, you may want to prime it first just to ensure that the paint sticks.

Also, as many people on here would, I would recommend going to a paint store to get your paint as you are likely to have adhesion problems with the quality paints they sell than if you go with one of the big box stores.

Did you do the test with alcohol or with denatured alcohol?
There's a huge difference

Should it have been denatured alcohol?

slickshift 04-11-2008 06:37 PM

Yes
Denatured
Isopropyl/rubbing, ethanol/booze......those won't do it

Oops! or Goof Off! will work for the test though,if you have either on hand

Actually, denatured alcohol is simply grain alcohol that has been modified to make it undrinkable. That said, denatured alcohol is much cheaper than pure grain from the liquor store, since it is not taxed like booze.

Ha ha ha ha....
I did not know that...lol...
I was just trying to say that old Christmas present of a bottle of undrinkabley bad scotch from Uncle Harry isn't going to work as a paint tester either...lol

Thanks for the clarification!
